Instructors are dedicated teachers committed to conveying their experience and knowledge. Having produced numerous independent and studio films, documentaries, television shows, and commercials, our instructors know intimately what the next generation of fillmmakers needs to thrive.
Don Hunter
Head of Film Production
Don began his career as a newspaper photographer in Winnipeg. In 1967, he attended film school in California, launching a career that has spanned more than 40 years in the industry. Don began working at the CBC Film Service, filming hundreds of documentaries across Canada and around the world. His credits include The Nature of Things, Man Alive, Sesame Street, and Children of the World. In the 1980s, he turned to dramatic series, including The Beachcombers, 21 Jump Street, and MacGyver.
After 18 years with CBC he became a full member of the international motion picture union, IATSE, and continued working with 16mm and 35mm film for a number of international production companies, including Paramount Pictures and MGM, before becoming a cinematography instructor at VFS in 1999. Through the 1990s, he filmed episodes of Stargate SG-1, The X-Files, and The Sentinel. In 2000, he was awarded a Full Membership to the Canadian Society of Cinematographers. After 12 enjoyable and rewarding years of teaching at VFS, Don became Head of Department for Film Production.
